Dave Davison is a playable character in Not For Broadcast.

'Ello mate! It's Dave!

Description[ | ]

David, commonly known as Dave, is the former Vision Mixer for the National Nightly News, having given the job to Alex Winston when he fled the country. He voices the initial tutorials, and has brief appearances throughout the rest of the game.

Dave makes a major appearance during the Not For Broadcast: Bits of Your Life DLC, starring as the playable character and providing commentary on most events in the broadcast.

Personality[ | ]

History[ | ]

Before The Game[ | ]

Not much is known about Dave's life prior to the start of the game.

At some point in time, he was hired by the Channel One network as the National Nightly News' Vision Mixer, working with the station at least since 1983. His crude personality made him disliked by a majority of his co-workers, and sparked a fierce prank war between him and Channel One's Head of Maintenance, Frank. The two pranked each other back and forth, culminating in Dave pissing in a water cooler during one of Channel One's annual Christmas parties, presumably resulting in him winning the war.

Despite Dave being an irritating prick, he'd form a close bond with several people, referred to as 'the Boys'. Dave would spend weekends with them, going to pubs or riding bikes. As of November 1984, Dave made plans to buy one of the Boys, Bobby, new panniers for his bike, presumably for his birthday on the 20th. Whether Dave did, due to the events of Day 1: The Election, is unknown.

Day -49: Bits of Your Life[ | ]

Dave is assigned by Boseman to work a late-night shift on a Bits of Your Life broadcast. He does so begrudgingly and, when given the option, plays multiple clips to anger Peter Clement. Though Dave successfully finishes the broadcast, he fears that he'll now have to leave the country after Peter Clement warns that he'll remember him.

Due to Dave being aware that he is a character in a DLC, he restarts the broadcast in a loop, dissatisfied at how boring it was. In order to entertain himself, Dave tampers with the Calls Machine, calling guests out of their scheduled order and at different times, resulting in the broadcast ending in a variety of different ways.

Throughout each consecutive playthrough of the broadcast, Dave receives a call by the show's floor manager, Eric Pimms, who vaguely remembers the events of previous playthroughs through dreams he had the night prior. Dave progressively tries to convince Eric that he's a character in a video game, but when that doesn't work, Dave grows tired and breaks the Intercom. Eventually, Dave stops repeating the broadcast entirely, and time proceeds as normal, with only his first playthrough of the broadcast happening officially.

Episode 1[ | ]

Day 1: The Election[ | ]

Main article: Day 1: The Election

With Advance's newly-enacted Assets and Wealth Act threatening to take both his passport and money, and fearing personal retaliation from Peter Clement due to the Bits of Your Life broadcast, Dave makes plans to take a ferry and flee the country.

Covering for his absence, he guides Alex Winston, a janitor and passing acquaintance at Channel One who arrived to clean the Broadcast Room, through the process of running the night's National Nightly News broadcast. Once the broadcast ends, Dave gives his position of Vision Mixer to Alex, boarding the ferry and leaving the country towards somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere.

Later that night, he talks to Alex again, explaining the Broadcast Report system and the Archives to them.

Day 8: The Fallout[ | ]

Main article: Day 8: The Fallout

While at a party, Dave calls Alex and guides them during breaks in the National Nightly News broadcast. Initially trying to hurry Alex along in order to get back to his guests, Dave gets increasingly inebriated as the night progresses. At one point, he exclaims that he's "absolutely fuckin' flyin'" and asks Alex how it's going, before retracting his question and stating that he doesn't care, as he hates the fucking news.

Dave's party begins to die down by the time of the second ad break, where he tells Alex that he's quite drunk and it's been a great night. He guides Alex through broadcast mechanics a final time, before expressing his love for music and mentioning that he might go throw up in a bin.

Day 153: The Tempest[ | ]

Main article: Day 153: The Tempest

If the electrocuted controls mechanic is turned off in-game, Dave is mentioned in a call Alex Winston receives from Boseman during the second ad break. In the call, Boseman informs Alex about the controls potentially showing the odd spark due to the storm, and remarks that such is nothing to worry about as it happens all the time, citing an example of when Dave got shocked into a coma the year prior but was "up and at 'em" the following day.

Day ???: The Lockdown[ | ]

Alex Winston receives a call from Dave during the first ad break, who cheerfully informs them that he's decided to come home. Dave states that he'll call them back at the next break to talk about how he can get his job back, and expresses good wishes to Alex before hanging up.

During the second ad break, Dave calls Alex again, his voice muffled due to audio interference. He tells them that he's ran into a few problems getting back, though mentions it's not as bad as the problems Alex is currently facing, as they've got a Mrs Snugglehugs loose in the Broadcast Room. He instructs them to whack it on the head if it gives them any trouble. Dave then exclaims that it's pretty bad where he is too due to the Mrs Snugglehugs getting onboard, adding that the Captain's down, and worse, the chef is down too and out of rum. He warns Alex that he isn't sure he'll make it to sobriety or dry land, and that if he had a missus, he'd ask them to tell her that he loved her, commenting that he's kind of pissed his life away. Before hanging up, he remarks that he's at least outdoors.

Dave returns during the third ad break as the broadcast ends, appearing over the phone alongside Jenny. They both continuously shout at Alex to wake up as they're swarmed by Mrs. Snugglehugs in the Broadcast Room, all of them soon jumping towards Alex.

Episode 2[ | ]

Day 290: A National News Night[ | ]

If Alex Winston is presented with an award at the Channel One Gala for 'Best Newcomer to the Channel One Family', they have the option of mentioning Dave when asked by Adrian Atkinson-Blimey if they'd like to say a few words. If chosen, Alex jokingly thanks Dave for fleeing the country and leaving them his job. The joke isn't taken well, and while most of the room breaks out into polite laughter, neither Julia Salisbury, Peter Clement, or Boseman so much as crack a smile at it.

Episode 3[ | ]

Day 1975: The Sterility[ | ]

If Laurence Blunderclatch was shown losing it during the Election, and no Eye of the Beholder advertisements were broadcast throughout the game, Dave is mentioned by Robyn Shorte following her interview with a pissed-off Blunderclatch. There, she expresses frustration in regards to the interview, mentioning that Dave has a lot to answer for and remarks she would've ran too.

Challenges[ | ]

Main article: Challenge Room

Switcheroo[ | ]

In the initial Switcheroo challenge, Dave appears over the intercom and acknowledges that it isn't ideal for Alex's Vision Mixer's buttons to be switching around 'like a swinger at a barmitzvah', but that he can't let Frank win. He tells them to show Frank who the real chump at Channel One is, and before hanging up, recommends that they seriously don't drink from the water cooler.

When Alex completes the broadcast, Dave calls them again to give congratulations. He tells them not to worry about any retaliation coming their way, but remarks that he can't say the same for Frank. He informs Alex that he's off to piss in the coffee machine, and before hanging up, comments that he's hilarious.

Snugglef*cked[ | ]

In the initial Snugglef*cked challenge, Dave appears over the intercom while in the middle of a conversation with another person. He makes a bet, wagering 'all of it' and his car keys, beginning to tell them of how there's loads of something. Dave then senses Alex's presence, greeting them and saying that he may have accidentally released some of the little 'snuggle-buggers' in the Challenge Room with them. He instructs Alex to not let it throw them off, as he's got a lot of money riding on it.

When Alex completes the broadcast, Dave call them again, sounding somewhat disappointed. He congratulates them for proving they could do that, and mentions he supposes he'll be walking home then, and telling his youngest she won't be going to college.

Trivia[ | ]

  • While Dave isn't seen directly in-game, a photograph visible on the Broadcast Room's Desk on Day 1 has been confirmed by the developers to feature him.[2]
